Chapter Leaders meet Leadership Program Malaysian Alumni
Event: Meeting of EWC Leadership program Malaysian alumni with officials
from the EWC
Date: Saturday, 23rd March 2019
Time: 9 to 11 am
Venue: Shangrila Hotel, Kuala Lumpur
Dr Khanif and Dr Gan were invited to the event to meet the young alumni. Datuk Saleh was invited in his capacity as immediate past president of the chapter, and an expert in entrepreneurship which is part of the focus in the EWC leadership programs.
The EWC officials present were Christina Monroe, Lance, Nick and Thomas. It was a very good meeting with a briefing from Thomas about the Innovation Day Project which will kick off in KL in January 2020.
The chapter hopes that all these new alumni will participate in our chapter activities to help to promote the goals of EWC.

2019 Reunion Lunch
The 2019 reunion lunch was held on 12 January at Aroi Dee Thai Restaurant, Palm Gardenn Hotel in Putrajaya. It was attended by about 30 members.

Chapter alumni lunch meeting with Noreen & Karen
The East West Center Alumni Association Chapter of Malaysia hosted a lunch meeting for Noreen and Karen from the East West Center on Wednesday 9th November at Bunga Raya Chinese Restaurant at the Royal Lake Club, Kuala Lumpur.

During the meeting, Karen updated us about affairs of the EWC, the new President etc. Noreen briefed us about programs in other chapters. We told her that the Singapore Chapter has contacted us recently to explore working on joint projects. Noreen said this has indeed been talked about in the conference held in Manila recently. She will continue to work with the various chapters towards this goal.
We also offered to help the EWC in screening applicants for EWC programs, like we used to do with MACEE over the years. Karen said she will bring this matter up with the EWC. We informed them that we have also been doing pre-departure briefing for participants to the EWC programs for many years now and this will continue, as long as EWC connects us with the new participants.

Dr Uzir (our treasurer) is the Chairman of the Organising Committee. Tan Sri Salleh Mohd. Nor presented an interesting and informative video about his recent trip to Antartica. Mahalo!

Please find below what I have written on behalf of our Malaysian Chapter in response to request for contribution to the The Sunday Star Education section, published on 30 April 2012.
“I first met Hyacinth in August 1984 when I arrived at the East-West Center, Hawaii, to pursue my doctorate at the University of
Hawaii. She was then already into her 3rd year of doctoral study. Since then we have worked closely as friends and colleagues, especially
in the International East West Center Alumni Association, Chapter of Malaysia. Hyacinth has played a very active
role in the association all these years. She has always been an inspiration to
younger alumni, and the driving force behind the many educational projects
undertaken by the association. I have had the honor of working with her on
these projects over the years, amongst which was the ROPE (Rural Outreach
Program for English) Project which she initiated and spearheaded in mid 1990s to help improve
the English proficiency of secondary students in rural schools. In this
project, the association provided funding for TESL students from UM and
UPM to design and publish EMAS (English language MAgazine for Schools) which
was distributed FREE to all rural schools in Selangor. EMAS was very well
received by both teachers and students who have benefitted greatly from it.
Needless to say, Hyacinth has also played important role in raising funds to support
this and many other educational projects of the association all these years,
such as English camps for rural schools, orphanages etc. Her passing on is a
great loss to the association and Malaysian academia at large.”

Recent EWC Events in Kuala Lumpur
Aloha!
During the lunch, I managed to continue my question (from the talk) for Ric about "El Condor Pasa", it's origin, pentatonic scale etc.... I also learnt form Ric that like us, the Hawaii Chapter's meeting is sometimes attended by only three or four people! So, we are NOT alone....
I attended the following talk by EWCA President, Ric Trimillos on 25 October. The event was organised by Prof. Anis of UM, a fellow UH alumnus, and our latest EWC association's "honorary member". The talk was very enlightening and interesting, even entertaining, in spite of some unexpected technical glitches:

BTW, during his talk, Ric made references to some music personalities most of us here in Malaysia are familiar with e.g. Anita Mui, Warren Mok, P. Ramli etc. I got to enjoy a short clip of Warren Mok’s rendition of Nessun Dorma, simply wonderful! If you missed the talk, too bad!
The EWC Alumni Association, Chapter of Malaysia hosted a lunch for Ric the following day, on 26th October, at Kampung Restaurant, at 12.30 pm.
The lunch party was very well attended by about 25 members and friends. The food, as usual, was delicious! Everyone had a good time enjoying the camaraderie, and reminiscing about the “good, old days”…. including the newbies or recent returnees, one of them a second generation EWC alumnus! Lai’s father is an alumnus who was at the EWC in the 70’s! (Sorry, I forgot her full name name, will have to get it from Poh who is keeping the name list of lunch attendants.) Also worthy of special mention is Vijayan who is currently working in Singapore and has turned up for the occasion to celebrate Deepavali with all of us. Then, there was Satwant whom we have not seen for a while because of his busy work schedule….and also Abdullah Tengah and wife who made a rare appearance! I will put up some photos later for you to see who was there at the lunch party….
The highlight or most important part of that event was of course, a talk by Ric to update us about happenings at the EWC. I was too busy taking photos and collecting money on behalf of Poh (for the lunch lah!) to take notes, but the gist of what I can remember is as follows:
The new intake of students/grantees at the EWC in September this year is around 120, thus bringing the current total student population to a healthy 240 something at the center. Although there has been a budget cut by the US Congress for EWC due to recent economic downturn in the US, President Charles Morrison is optimistic that funds will continue to come in. EWC will continue to play its vital role, especially since relationship with UH has been improving over the years after a “rough patch” in the late 80’s and 90’s. Many “old timers” whom we fondly remember have retired from the EWC. Sumi Makey and Rose Nakamura, together with quite a few other EWC retirees are now happily spending their now carefree days at a very nice (and upmarket) retirement home in Honolulu. I will find out the name of this home so that I can try to save up enough money to join them there one day!!! J
